Vitality, NaVi, Falcons, FURIA, G2, Spirit, Aurora, and MOUZ all advanced through the IEM Rio 2026 group stage opening round on Day 1, with every higher-seeded team taking their series. Not a single upset. The Farmasi Arena crowd got volume, but no drama.

The scorelines tell one story. The individual performances tell a louder one.

ZywOo Sets the Tone

ZywOo posted a 2.08 rating across two maps with a +27 kill differential, the best individual performance of the day by a significant margin. Vitality dismantled RED Canids without conceding double digits on either map, debuting a new Overpass boost in the process. The world’s No. 1 team looked exactly like the world’s No. 1 team.

YEKINDAR followed with a 1.76 rating as FURIA cruised past Passion UA in straight maps, giving the Rio crowd a comfortable opening night. m0NESY rounded out the top three at 1.71, leading Falcons to a clean 2โ€“0 over 3DMAX.

NaVi Survive a Scare

The only match that actually felt competitive at the top came from NaVi vs. B8. NaVi opened with a brutal 13โ€“0 on Ancient, then somehow lost Inferno 4โ€“13. The comeback happened on Dust2, where Makazze stepped up to close it out 13โ€“5. The same old NaVi pattern: slow tournament starts, shaky map picks, enough talent to brute-force the result anyway.

B8 taking a map that convincingly will worry NaVi’s staff ahead of tougher matchups. Today they face FURIA in the upper bracket semifinal, and the Brazilian crowd will not make that easy.

Spirit Flatten Liquid, G2 Scrape Through Without huNter-

Spirit handled Liquid 2โ€“0 in the most forgettable series of the day. donk and sh1ro didn’t need to gear up. Liquid, now with malbsMd in the roster and still no clear identity, look like a team playing out a calendar rather than chasing a title.

G2 advanced 2โ€“1 over Gentle Mates, but the French squad playing with tAk standing in for the injured huNter- looked disjointed. They dropped their Inferno pick before recovering on the remaining maps. Facing Vitality in the upper bracket semifinal today, that kind of inconsistency won’t survive contact.

The real tournament starts now. Eight teams are one loss from elimination. Vitality are chasing a fourth straight title in 2026 and a potential second ESL Grand Slam, one win away from becoming the first team to claim the honor twice. Falcons play under the cloud of reported roster changes, with sources linking karrigan to the organization ahead of the Cologne Major. For kyxsan, this could be an audition for his own future.

Day 1 proved the gap between tiers at IEM Rio is enormous. Day 2 will show whether anyone in the top tier can actually challenge Vitality.
